Fairgate

A cookie consent manager for any website. Scan a page, gate its trackers automatically and add a banner that truly blocks them until visitors agree.

Description

Most cookie banners are decoration, because the trackers have already run by the time someone clicks. Fairgate works the other way round. Analytics, advertising and other tools stay switched off until the visitor agrees, then start immediately without a page reload. If the visitor withdraws, their tracker cookies are removed.

Setup starts with the scanner. Paste a page's HTML and Fairgate recognises 23 common services, including Google Analytics, Meta Pixel, TikTok, Hotjar, LinkedIn, YouTube and Google Maps. It tells you what each one needs, rewrites your page so trackers wait for consent, leaves essential services such as Stripe running and flags anything it doesn't recognise. It also drafts a cookie policy from what it found.

The banner comes in three layouts, in your brand colour, in English, Hebrew, Spanish, French or German. It supports Google Consent Mode v2, Global Privacy Control, asking again when your policy changes, a place-holder with an Allow button for blocked videos and maps, and a Privacy choices button so people can change their mind. Each choice can be logged to your own webhook with a random ID.

A built-in audit warns about dark patterns such as a hidden Reject button, and the studio shows real gated scripts starting and stopping as you click. The widget is one dependency-free file. Agencies can roll it out to every client with no monthly fee per site.

What works

  • HTML scanner that recognises 23 services
  • Automatic rewrite of a page so trackers wait for consent
  • Blocks gated scripts and iframes until consent, then starts them without a reload
  • Stops scripts that other code adds from a block list
  • Removes tracker cookies when consent is withdrawn
  • Bar, corner and centre layouts in your brand colour
  • English, Hebrew, Spanish, French and German
  • Google Consent Mode v2, with denied defaults
  • Global Privacy Control support
  • Asks again on a new policy version, on expiry or when categories change
  • Place-holder with Allow button for blocked videos and maps
  • Privacy choices button, footer link and developer API
  • Consent log by webhook, with a random ID
  • Audit for dark patterns
  • Cookie policy draft
  • 16 tests, plus a browser run that proves on a simulated shop that no gated tracker is contacted before consent

What’s unfinished

  • The scanner reads pasted HTML: it doesn't crawl a site, so tags added by Google Tag Manager or by scripts aren't found
  • Gating depends on using the rewritten HTML. A tracker missed there is stopped from running only if it's on the block list, and the browser may still contact it
  • No hosted dashboard: consent records go only to your own webhook
  • No geolocation, so the banner shows to every visitor
  • No IAB TCF support, which some advertisers require
  • A real webhook delivery and a real Google account haven't been tested, and the shop test used simulated tracker responses
  • The studio itself is English only, and the translated banner text hasn't had native review

Technologies

HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Shadow DOM, Google Consent Mode v2, Webhooks, Node test runner

Setup requirements

Upload the files to any static web host and open index.html to use the studio. Upload embed/fairgate.js to the target site, paste the Install code first in the head tag, and replace the page's code with the gated version. Run the tests with npm test (Node 20 or newer).

Dependencies and ongoing costs

None. It's static files that run free on any web host, with no server or API keys. Keeping a consent log needs a webhook of your own.

Known limitations

Fairgate is a technical tool, not legal advice, and it doesn't guarantee compliance with GDPR, Israeli privacy law or any other law. The audit covers common good practice only, and the policy draft needs a legal check. Rules vary by country, so have a lawyer review your setup.
