Description

Coral is a full public transport app that runs entirely in the browser. Choose two places and it finds the best ways to get there, with the fastest route, the fewest changes and the least walking all compared side by side. Every result shows when to leave, what you'll ride, how long you'll walk and what it costs.

The search runs on RAPTOR, the round-based routing algorithm used for real journey planning. It handles leaving now, leaving at a set time or arriving by a deadline, walking to and between stops, step-free routes, chosen modes, a limit on changes and three walking paces. Services that run past midnight are handled properly too.

The rest of a real transit app is here as well. A smooth map shows every line and vehicle moving along its route, with zoom, pinch and tap. Stops show live departure boards, and lines show a stop diagram, vehicles in service, frequency and a full timetable. Service alerts change plans, boards and the map, so a delayed line or closed station is routed around straight away. Start a trip and Coral walks you through it step by step, telling you when to get off.

It comes with Almara, an invented harbour city with 12 lines, 40 stops and thousands of trips, so it works straight away. Load any standard GTFS timetable .zip to run it on a real network, with no server. English and Hebrew are both built in, including a full right-to-left layout, along with light and dark themes and a phone layout with a draggable sheet. It's a strong starting point for a city, operator, tourism board or transit startup.

What works

  • Journey search with RAPTOR, in one step for each number of changes
  • Leave now, leave at and arrive by
  • Sort by best, fastest, fewest changes or least walking
  • Walking to, from and between stops, and any point on the map
  • Step-free routes, modes, change limit and walking pace
  • Timeline for each journey, with waits, tight changes and fares
  • Step-by-step trip mode that tells you when to get off
  • Canvas map with parallel lines, moving vehicles, pan, zoom and pinch
  • Departure boards with countdowns and delays
  • Line pages with stop diagram, vehicles, frequency and timetables
  • Service alerts that change plans, boards and the map
  • Favourite stops, saved journeys, saved places and recent searches
  • Stop search in both languages
  • Full English and Hebrew, with a right-to-left layout
  • Light, dark and automatic themes
  • Phone layout with a draggable sheet
  • GTFS .zip import in the browser, including frequencies and calendar exceptions
  • Clock control to see the city at any hour, at up to 60 times speed
  • 33 engine tests and an automated browser run through every main screen

What’s unfinished

  • No live data feed: vehicle positions and delays come from the timetable and sample alerts, and GTFS-Realtime isn't connected
  • No address search or GPS location: start points are stops, saved places or map taps
  • An imported timetable has to be loaded again on each visit, and it has no land or sea map behind the lines
  • Very large timetables are refused, with a limit of about 1.5 million stop times, so a whole country may need splitting by region
  • No ticket purchase, and fares only work for the sample city
  • No app store build or offline install
  • The Hebrew was written without a native speaker's review, so have it checked before launch
  • Touch gestures haven't been tried on a real phone

Technologies

HTML, CSS, JavaScript (ES modules), Canvas, RAPTOR routing, GTFS, localStorage, Node test runner

Setup requirements

Upload the files to any static web host. To try it locally, run python3 -m http.server and open http://localhost:8000. Run the tests with npm test (Node 20 or newer).

Dependencies and ongoing costs

None. It's a static site that runs free on any web host, uses system fonts and needs no server, database or API keys.

Known limitations

Almara and all its timetables are invented, so this isn't a service people can rely on until it's loaded with real data. Vehicle positions are calculated from the timetable, not tracked. Check any operator's data licence before publishing their timetable.
