Bounce Orchestra

A spinning shape where every wall is a note and every bouncing ball is a musician. Music plays itself.

Description

Bounce Orchestra turns physics into music. Balls bounce around inside a slowly spinning shape, and each time one strikes a wall, that wall plays its note. Because the walls follow a musical scale, whatever happens sounds good, and because the shape never stops turning, the tune never quite repeats.

Click inside the shape to add a ball, and choose whether it plays a bell, a pluck or a buzz. Change the shape from a triangle to an octagon, spin it faster or backwards, and add gravity to make the rhythm tumble. Swap between five scales and seven keys while it plays.

Four ready-made arrangements get you started, from the calm Rain on glass to the chaos of Triangle riot. Walls flash and balls leave ripples as they strike, so it's as good to watch as it is to hear.

All sound is synthesised live in the browser with no audio files, in a bold Bauhaus poster design. Plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript with no server or running costs. It works as a relaxing toy, a teaching aid for scales, or a generative background for streams.

Dependencies and ongoing costs

None. It's a static site that runs free on any web host, uses system fonts and needs no audio files.

Known limitations

Browsers only allow sound after a click or tap, so it stays silent until you press Turn sound on or click the stage. Only settings are remembered, not the balls.
