Description
Asklight sits in the corner of a website and answers customers' questions at any hour. It searches the business's own help articles, so it can't invent a refund policy or promise something the business doesn't offer. If it isn't sure, it offers the closest matches. If it can't help, it says so and passes the visitor to a person.
There's no AI service behind it, so there are no per-message fees, no API keys and no customer questions sent to a third party. The search runs in the visitor's browser. It copes with different wordings, typing mistakes, plurals, synonyms that you define, and Hebrew prefixes.
The studio is where it gets useful. Paste an existing FAQ and it becomes articles. Then paste real questions from your inbox and Asklight shows what share it can answer and lists every gap, each with a Write answer button. A test console shows how it understood a question and why it chose an article.
When a visitor needs a person, the widget offers a message form that goes to your webhook or email, WhatsApp and phone, and it carries their question across so they don't have to retype it. Suggested questions can change by page, and unanswered questions can be sent to a webhook so the help centre keeps improving. It comes in English and Hebrew with a right-to-left layout, in one dependency-free file that installs on any site.

- Refuses to answer when it finds no match

- Studio to write and edit articles, with a live preview
- FAQ import from pasted text
- Gap finder that tests real questions and shows what's missing
- Test console that shows how a question was understood
- Suggested questions that change by page
- Unanswered questions sent to a webhook
- Safe formatting for bold, links and lists
- Page events and Google Tag Manager events
- English and Hebrew, with a right-to-left layout
- 14 engine tests and an automated browser run, including pasting the code into a blank page
What’s unfinished
- It matches words, so it doesn't truly understand questions or hold a conversation, and each message is handled on its own
- In the sample test set it picked the right article for 17 of 18 reworded questions, but results depend on your articles and wording
- No AI option is included
- No live chat: messages reach you by webhook or email
- No dashboard, so you need your own webhook to collect unanswered questions
- No crawler: articles are pasted or typed in
- A real webhook delivery wasn't tested, because hosted demos block outgoing requests
- The studio itself is English only, and the Hebrew hasn't had native review

Technologies
HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Shadow DOM, BM25 search, Webhooks, Node test runner
Setup requirements
Upload the files to any static web host and open index.html to use the studio. Upload embed/asklight.js to the target site and paste the code from the Install tab before the closing body tag. Run the tests with npm test (Node 20 or newer).
Dependencies and ongoing costs
None. It's static files that run free on any web host, with no server, AI service or API keys. Receiving messages by form needs a webhook.
Known limitations
All articles are part of the page's code, so include only public information. The whole help centre loads with the widget, so it suits up to a few hundred articles. Visitors can type personal details into a question, which matters if you turn on the unanswered questions webhook.
